Foot Surgery

What is foot surgery?

The feet comprise twenty-six bones and thirty-three joints, which are placed in columns and arches, differing in flexibility and rigidity. Due to the complexity of the structure, the foot and ankle are vulnerable to injury and degeneration.

How do you perform foot and ankle surgery?

Dr Grey specialises in the following foot and ankle surgeries:

  • Ligament reconstruction
of the ankle involves repairing the remaining ligament using anchored stitches or strengthening the ligament by utilising supportive tissues or a donor's tendon to replace the ruptured ligaments.
  • Foot arthritis surgery
is performed to treat debilitating pain and immobility from foot arthritis, which ultimately affects your ability to participate in sports or other daily activities. Usually, doctors recommend foot surgery for pain relief and enhanced joint function over a long time.
  • Hallux Valgus (Bunion) corrective surgery
is a procedure that entails resolving Hallux Valgus, also known as a bunion. Apart from a hard lump on the medial aspect of the big toe, a bunion can also result in pain, inflammation and swelling. Hallux Valgus surgery involves a combination of soft tissue releases and bony re-alignment procedures depending on the degree of the defect.
  • Morton’s neuroma excision
is the surgical treatment of Morton’s neuroma, a condition which entails thickening of the tissue that surrounds the nerves running toward the toes. As a result, Morton’s neuroma can cause a burning sensation at the ball of the foot and a numb or tingling sensation in the toes. Morton’s neuroma excision involves removing a portion of the affected nerve or creating more room around the nerve to relieve pressure from the nerve.

FAQ

1Why is ankle ligament reconstruction performed?
Ankle ligament reconstruction is done to address the following symptoms:
  • Ankle instability
  • Impingement of ligament tissue within the ankle joint.
  • Fracture-dislocation of the ankle.
2When do you need to perform an osteotomy?
An osteotomy can be performed at different levels of the mid- or forefoot to restore bony deformities of the foot. Foot surgery is considered when conservative methods of treatment, such as better-fitting shoes, padding and prescription pain medication, do not relieve the discomfort or pain.
3Does it take long to recover from Morton’s neuroma surgery?
You can resume low-impact physical activity within two to three weeks.
